February Morning Walkabout

Saw his flight but not his face
woodpecker playing in the darkened space
Turkeys gazing down the hill
Us three abreast and it's winter still

Sap is rising in the trees
I feel it like an unseen breeze
Earth awakens beneath the chill

Elk's been here and over there
prints so deep we stop and stare
